This birchbark basket is produced by the Dene people of Fort Laird, known as "the tropics of the north". This is a small community near the legendary Nahanni National Park Reserve in the southwest corner of Northwest Territories.

Birchbark is cut into patterns which are decorated either with dyed porcupine quills or by scraping away layers of the bark. A willow frame is placed around the top of the basket, then sewn into place with thin strips of white spruce root, using an awl to punch holes.

Each article is made from material gathered in the area and is produced in the homes of the local Dene people. Many hours after spent creating this one of a kind handmade basket.
