I found this broken hand-drum at a pawn shop on 20th. It made me sad, seeing it on a shelf, with a big tear in its hide. So I bought it. I wanted to bring it home with me, get it out of that dusty store, warm it up and make it feel loved (dramatic, I know, you should have seen me when I was a kid!).
I knew it was going to be a canvas at some point, but I didn’t know when. I just knew I wasn’t yet ready to paint on it. It knew, too.
Then one day, I musta saw some artist on Instagram reels or something, I can’t remember how I was inspired, but I realized art can have mixed mediums. What if it was sewed back together? Okay, yes, but what to paint on it? Would it just be sewed, and the painting has nothing to do with it?
I think I was on a trip away from home when I thought up Monty & Mortimer stitching it up themselves, fixing up a hole in space. And I felt immediately relieved. Yes. That’s it.
I originally wasn’t going to place this one up for sale, as it really is held near and dear to my heart, but as this is my first ever solo exhibit (FOREVER THANK YOU SHARI!!!) I might as well show y’all what I keep near and dear to me.
