about the artist

Yasakw (Shelly Samuels)

Meet Yasakw (Shelly Samuels), Haida, Kwakwaka’wakw, the artist behind Ravens’ Resilience, the design for our 2025 Orange Shirt. Belonging to the Haida matrilineal society through the Raven, Three Fin Killer Whale, and Dogfish clans, and to the Thunderbird and Grizzly Bear clans on the Kwakwaka’wakw side, Yasakw lives on Haida Gwaii with family, creating formline art daily while exploring new artistic forms.
